You can make it disappear when the pointer is not moving or leave it on all the time.
Also, there is only one option to control the behavior of the halo. Also, there is no option to choose the size of the “halo” or its shape (magnification with a square halo would be great for text, for instance).
You can only choose between the system defined desktop palette (that is only gray or blue in my Mac) or turquoise, which is not contrasting even. First, there is no much choice regarding the colors for the “halo” surrounding the pointer. There are, however, aspects that need to be changed so that it is more useful. This is a good idea and works well in general.
